Why?

Hi there. My name is Kara and I’m the human behind Super Human Therapy. I started this business in late 2021 because I got so lucky. Or maybe it wasn’t luck. Maybe I have been putting things into motion for a long time, and those things finally collided in a fortuitous way.
Here’s what happened:
I was taking a class in the aerial studio next door (Challenge Aerial), and the owner of that studio informed me that the space across the hall was going to be available. She knew that I had long been dreaming of combining two of my loves - Aerial dance and physical therapy - and this space would allow me to operate in close proximity to the population I wished to serve. So, I made a call, and by the end of the day I was on the path to signing a lease to occupy the space.
4.5 years later, I am here, and I have been doing exactly what I set out to do.
On a daily basis, I help to keep artists in the air. I also have settled into being the local Physical therapist serving the Grant Park community. I love it here. I love what I do…hence the “so lucky” comment earlier.
Since starting this business, I have also started teaching at the school from which I graduated. In 2012, I became a Doctor of physical therapy. In 2023 I became a professor of physical therapy. In the series of WTF moments that have dotted my timeline, this may have been the biggest surprise and somehow now I am a clinical professor teaching Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology to first year PT students at Georgia State University.
It is quite honestly the hardest job I have ever had. Teaching is not for the faint of heart and I had more than a few blunders in my early days. Now though, I am awed on a daily basis by the beauty of the human nervous system. I also have access to a stockpile of ACTUAL human brains that we dissect and appreciate as a part of our student education.
I truly do not know how I got here. I am also incredibly grateful that I did.
So perhaps the “Why” behind Super Human Therapy could be "luck?”
No, luck was instrumental no doubt, but the why is something that has lived in my heart for as long as I can remember.
The why behind Super Human Therapy comes down to what we sometimes call, “inalienable rights.” If we really dissect the phrase, we start with the word inalienable. That word means that certain rights cannot be taken away. Certain rights are inherent to all conscious beings who occupy space in this moment. By just existing, we hold these rights.
Now, of course we can get political or divisive when we discuss such things, but that is not my intent. Rather, I would like to suggest that these inalienable rights are part of a state of being that allows the human to thrive. The idea of these rights being inalienable speaks to the idea that without them, a state of disease will ensue.
So we have the question of what does a human require in order to exist and yes, to thrive?
(…and when I think about this question - which I often do - my answer ultimately is always the same)
To feel safe.
A human needs to feel safe. It is that simple.
When our bodies feel safe, they operate in the parasympathetic state of the nervous system. It is in this state (which is far too complex to fully explain now) that the human being is able to heal injured tissue, to fight disease, to digest and restore fuel supplies, to clean out waste in the system, to learn, to grow, and perhaps most importantly, to connect with other humans.
As a physical therapist, my job is to help people to restore this state.
People come to me with injured bodies, and they are so often scared. They wonder things like,
“Why has my body betrayed me?”
“Am I broken?”
“Will I ever be able to do what I could do before?”
“Will this pain ever stop?”
“What am I allowed to do?”
At their core, all of these questions come back to safety. These people do not feel safe.
I could go on and on, but I hope my point is clear. My job…my WHY…is to guide these humans back to safety. We work with movement, touch, creativity, and connection, to find a sense of security again. When that is found, the person can heal, grow, and thrive again.
When humans thrive, we get to see all the beauty they can create. I want to contribute to that beauty.
When I started Super Human Therapy, I wanted to be a place where humans could show up at their most human moments – where they felt most separate from their inherent gifts – and they found a place where they could reconnect to themselves again.
Why? Because you are already super powered. I promise you are.
With Love,
Kara
